We have been exclusively coaching working parents in the UK since 1998. And still there is confusion about what a working parent coach does, and how and whether it is different to a run of the mill executive coach.
I get it…. I have heard this confusion many times. Do you help with breastfeeding? (uh…nope) Can you give advice on childcare options (from a support network perspective, yes.), Can you help my child sleep through the night (sorry nope but we know a man/woman who can).
I think a lot of the confusion is due to the word ‘parent’. It has us think of parenting training or a parent coach maybe?
This is not what we do.
First and foremost, we are executive coaches. Experienced, senior, executive coaches, all accredited and critically, all with depth psychological trainings that underpin our work. We are all leadership coaches who work with senior leaders and leaders of high potential in stretch sectors and roles. Frankly, where being a working parent is tough.
We are definitely not a ‘less than’ option just because we have ‘working parent’ in our title and neither are you. Choosing to work with an executive coach who specialises in working with working parents is a really smart idea – if you are a working parent, that is…
We are executive coaches that just happen to be passionate about working with working parents and families.
Because we fundamentally believe that being a working parent should not be a barrier to success, and we want cultural change that support working families, at home and at work, because both need to work for it all to work.
Where we are different is that we are all specifically trained in working with families as well as leaders.
We see all of you when you walk in the room. You, your role, your leadership, your children, your family, your energy, your work team, your support network (or lack of it)
We are experts in attachment theory and what it takes to raise thriving families when we work
We are all parents (birth, step, single, adoptive, you name it!) and so we have some idea of what it means to have to show up well in both areas of your life
We are experts in transitions, which all working parents know about.
We don’t just coach around maternity of paternity leave
And we certainly don’t just work with working mothers
We all come from corporate backgrounds
As executive coaches first we are trained to increase agency in our clients, to help our clients make meaningful and helpful shifts in their lives, to reorientate and reshape a new identity as a working parent. We coach systemically and are as interested in the system that surrounds our clients as we are in them – what does your team need you to learn and/or what does your organisation need most from you are great coaching questions that we ask.
We practice and bring mindfulness into our work- not because its trendy and in vogue but because every senior leader who is also a parent needs more headspace and the capacity to build a reflective practice. We don’t actually learn from experience we learn from reflecting on experience.
We coach around confidence, balance, change, resilience, visibility, boundaries, leadership, advancement. Your stuck points, your inner critic, your imposter syndrome, your strengths.
And we love this work because we believe, just like us, that working parents are remarkable.
We work with all of you, you as a leader and you as a mum or dad, it’s a two track coaching experience that encompasses personal and professional, because as working parents the two become inseparable.
