Whether it’s our partners, a long time team member, or a teenager we can fall into the trap of assuming they can read our minds and we can read theirs. We think this can save us time and perhaps discomfort because we don’t have to spell everything out.
However assumptions can lead to confusion, frustration and low mood. “I don’t know what my boss wants from me because they never tell me clearly”. “I can’t help my team member if they don’t tell me they need help.”
If we make it easy for other people to understand our needs and wants we make it easy for ourselves too. Be clear in your communication explaining what you want and why. Be generous in answering their questions. Ask the people around you to do the same. Being clear is being kind.
